How to safely update plugins without losing settings
Updating or manually reinstalling Divi Extended plugins is a standard process designed to add new features, improve builder performance, and ensure full compatibility with WordPress and Divi updates. All your custom module settings, layout designs, and saved content remain safely stored in your WordPress database throughout the update process.
Will updating the plugin delete existing content
No, updating or replacing a plugin will not affect your existing settings, module configurations, or page content. When you update a plugin by replacing its files, WordPress retains all saved database entries. Once the new plugin version is activated, your modules will continue to function seamlessly with all existing configurations intact.
Important precautions before installing updates
Creating a website backup
Although plugin updates are safe and do not delete content, we strongly recommend taking a complete backup of your website (including both database and site files) before manually installing any downloaded plugin update. Having a recent backup ensures you can quickly restore your website in the rare event of a server error or hosting conflict.
Avoiding page edits during updates
While the plugin is actively being uploaded, replaced, or updated in your WordPress admin dashboard, please do not open, edit, or save any pages in the Divi Builder or WordPress block editor. Making edits while plugin files are being swapped can cause temporary visual builder saving errors. Wait until the updated plugin is fully activated before resuming page edits.
Step by step guide to manual plugin updating
- Log into your WordPress administrative dashboard.
- Create a full backup of your website using your hosting backup tool or a backup plugin.
- Download the latest plugin ZIP file from your account dashboard.
- Navigate to Plugins and click Add New Plugin in your WordPress dashboard menu.
- Click the Upload Plugin button at the top of the screen.
- Choose the downloaded ZIP file from your computer and click Install Now.
- When prompted by WordPress, click Replace current with uploaded to overwrite the old plugin files with the updated version.
- Click Activate Plugin once the installation finishes.
Post update verification steps
- Visit your website front-end to verify that your pages and modules are displaying correctly.
- Open the Divi Visual Builder on any page to verify that all module controls are loading properly.
- Clear your browser cache and website caching plugin (if applicable) to ensure the latest plugin stylesheets and scripts are served.
- You can now safely resume editing and creating pages on your website.
